Of
course, although we'd love to hear
from you, we're sure you'd rather not
call us at all. After all there
are happier reasons you could contact
us than the heart-falls-into-stomach
experience of a major computer
crash. So, here's a few tips
that will help keep your computer
happy and healthy so it can be with
you for years to come--or at least
until it becomes outdated and you can
get a new toy.
-
To
avoid viruses never download
anything from a source you don't
absolutely trust.
-
To
avoid viruses never open
attachments in an email if you
aren't sure of the source.
Even if you are sure of the
source, think twice.
Sometimes viruses are circulated
in files disguised as jokes so
your buddy could have sent you a
virus without knowing it.
-
Windows
updates its security features
frequently. Take advantage
of it. Just hit Windows
Updates on your Start Menu and
follow the directions. It
only takes a few minutes.
-
Maintain
up-to-date anti-virus software on
your computer.
-
To
keep your computer fit and running
well, defragment your hard drive
once every two or three months or
so. You can do this from the
"Tools" tab after right
clicking on your C drive and
clicking on
"Properties".
-
From
this same menu you can also scan
your disk for errors.
Doesn't hurt to do this once and a
while as well.
-
If
your computer locks up.
Don't kick it, whack it or start
slamming on the keyboard.
You are allowed to scream at
it.
-
Never
move your computer while its on
and avoid putting it somewhere
where it's likely to get bumped.
-
Get
a good surge protector to protect
your computer from surges that can
come up the power lines
particularly during
storms.
-
Turn
off your computer and unplug it if
it's storming.
-
Unplug
your computer when you go out of
town, especially if your surge
protector is bad.
-
Turn
your computer off at night.
-
If
your computer really locks up and
you need to reboot it by flipping
the power switch, always make sure
you wait at least 30 to 60 seconds
between turning it off and turning
it back on.
-
Vacuum
off the fans every once and a
while.
-
Backup
your entire system often.
Backup important files more
often.
-
Delete
stuff you don't need or never
use. Of course, make sure
you have it on disk if you think
you might need it at some later
date.
-
Every
once and a while, tune into Call
for Help with Leo Laporte on Tech
TV. They always have great
info on the latest viruses and
entertaining computer tips that
they (mostly) explain in layman's
terms.
