Naming
Your Website
A
rose by any other name would smell as
sweet? Not so with
domains. You website name has to
be short, simple and striking else
people won't remember it.
Problem is, with over 10,000 names a
day being registered and over 30
million registered in total, sometimes
finding the right domain name can be
frustrating. Sometimes, it can
feel like all the good ones are
taken. Don't give up hope,
though. There are still good
domain names out there.
Sometimes it just takes a little
patience and a little ingenuity to
find the right one.
Here
are some tips on naming your website:
-
If
you have an unusual business name,
you may get off easy in the domain
name registration process.
zitechlogic.com, for example, was
an easy choice for us. If
your company name is Ace, it might
be a bit harder.
-
Keep
it as short and catchy as
possible, but make sure it's
representative of your
business. papago.com might
be available and cute, but what
the heck does it mean?
-
Although
they may look snazzy, keep away
from weird spellings. It's
hard for people to remember to add
an extra z and an f instead of a
ph in something like:
acezfotoshop.com
-
Hyphenated
versions of your name are
sometimes available, but in
general it is best to avoid
them. After all, if someone
owns acesphoto.com and you own
aces-photo.com, what site do you
think your customer will end up at
when he forgets to put the hyphen
in your website
address?
-
The
same thing goes for .net and other
such extensions. If you
register for acesphoto.net and
someone has acesphoto.com, chances
are acesphoto.com will get a lot
of business intended for your
site. In general, avoid
extensions that aren't .com unless
you already own the .com address.

name, follow these instructions:
-
Click
on the following link: Domain
Name Registration and Availability
-
Enter
the domain name for which you
would like to check availability
in the blue and gray box on the
left side of the page.
-
If
the name is available, you may
click on "Click Here to
Register" and follow the
online registration process.
Once you have registered your
name, you will own that name for
the period of time you have
chosen. No one else will be
able to use or register this
name.
-
If
the name is not available, you may
continue to check availability of
other possible names. Enter
the new name in the blue box at
the bottom of the page and click
on "Check Availability."
-
Important:
It is VERY important that you
remember the contact information
you enter when registering a
domain name, especially the email
address. This email
address will be where
ICANN will send your renewal
information. If you miss
this email your domain name will
be thrown back out into the
available domain name population
when it expires. Someone
else will then be able to register
it!
