VHStoDVD Transfers

With DVD quickly becoming the preferred format for video, it is becoming increasingly popular to transfer those big bulky VHS tapes and presentation slides to DVD.  Although software is available that will help you accomplish such transfers yourself, the learning-curve for the software can be pretty steep.  You have to worry about which MPEG-2 encoding process will be most appropriate, what bit-rate will work best, which DVD type (DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-18, etc) will be needed and whether or not the playback specifications are compatible with consumer DVD players.  Not only do you have to spend your time learning an extensive and complicated process, but you have to spend your money on software and DVDs.  Trust us!  If you aren't genuinely interested in the process for its own merit, let someone else mess with it.  By the time you add up the value of the time you spend and the value of the software and DVDs, you'll wish that you had let a professional handle it.  It will end up cheaper and less frustrating.

VHStoDVD Transfer FAQ

Why transfer?
If you've ever owned a VHS tape for more than five or ten years, you'll notice that the quality of the tape has deteriorated.  Maybe you thought it was something you did or that you didn't store in carefully enough, but the fact is, no matter how delicately you take care of your VHS tapes they will degrade.  It's in the very nature of the magnetic strip that holds the video information.

DVDs, on the other hand, will never degrade.  Unless physically scratched, they will last with perfect quality virtually forever.

DVDs are also much easier to use during sales presentations that video.  You can include extras appropriate to your presentation, can skip chapters at will, and can replay the DVD without rewinding.

Which formats can you transfer to DVD?
We transfer:

  • all major video formats including VHS (of course), Hi8, DVHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, and many, many more
  • digital pictures
  • photos
  • slides
  • PowerPoint presentations

How much do video transfers cost?
The total cost of the transfer depends on:

  • the desired quality of the end-DVD
  • the rarity/complexity of the video format from which the video will be transferred
  • the complexity and quantity of navigation, games and extras you will want added to the DVD
  • the packaging, cover art, flier inserts, and sleeve art desired
  • and the finished length of the completed DVD

In general, you can estimate that video transfers (not including extensive DVD extras or custom artwork) will cost from between $20 and $30 per hour of video transferred.  Photos, digital pictures and slides will usually cost somewhere between 75 cents and $1.50 each.  Powerpoint presentations are custom priced.

What sorts of things do people usually get transferred to DVDs?
Businesses often choose to transfer such things as sales presentations, instructional videos, Powerpoint presentations, slides, marketing material, TV commercials, or training & orientation material.  Individuals will often request transfers of home videos, wedding videos, and out-of-print or hard-to-find VHS material.

What if I need a DVD filmed and developed from scratch.  Can you handle that?
Absolutely.  Please see our Video Production and CD/DVD Development information.

Will I get my original videos back?
Of course.

What if the quality of my original videos is already bad?
Although the quality of DVDs are usually slightly better than the original material, there is only so much that can be done with poor-quality source material.  If your original video quality is bad, unfortunately, your DVD quality will not be much better.
